In a world where we have Nancy Botwin, the suburban housewife in Weeds selling dope to pay her mortgage and the science professor Walter White in Breaking Bad doing likewise, we meet cubicle-dweller Evan Powers who one day up and quits office hell and joins his roommate's marijuana empire. What starts out as a cool hippie scene with bonfire parties and such morphs into something else when Nick's empire turns out to be rooted in dirty deals with scary players.The first half of the book was terrific and, in particular, the author really captured Powers' voice as he narrates the story. Much of the action comes later in the book, although the plot choices and twists through the second half didn't fully work for me.

One keeps thinking they have it all figured out, then another twist comes along. If you enjoy guessing, you will enjoy the book
My first read from author Brandon Zenner. An audiobook gifted to me by the author and since I also own the edition I was able to follow along while being read to. It ended up being a good read, but it took a while. The book began slowly, built slowly and ended up being a good read. Narrator Jack de Golia did a good job with the book.
I really enjoyed the characters in this book. You feel like you know them or have met them - you really get a sense of the camaraderie of the housemates. I also love books which stays with the man narrator and doesn't switch sub-plots every chapter. Being from NJ, I could also relate to the setting in the Pine Barrens.
It had a nice pace and kept me interested such that I read it in a single day.
***SPOILER ALERT***
My only complaint was that there were too many twists at the end and a couple seemed a bit convoluted - but that's just my personal opinion, I see in other reviews that people really enjoyed all the twists.
Tales of drug lords are commonplace, but this has a different twist which made it a better fit for me. The fast pace and convolutions in the story made it quite enjoyable. Plus the noir overlay... liked it a lot.

Marijuana meets the Mafiya--of course, there's much more. Friendship and loyalty, disloyalty, cubicle stiflement, abuse and murder, betrayal and abandonment, corruption and crime. Criminals and victims.
Poor Evan Powers--quits his stultifying office position to work for his long-term housemate' s marijuana growing/selling operation. More cash, much less boredom, plus he enjoys the horticulture. It's not long though till the final silent partner dies, and the Russians muscle in. From there it's road trip time, and the whole ball of wax begins to melt. Nobody is trustworthy and nobody is who they seem. One thing's for sure the action never stops.

First an honest disclosure - This was purchased on accident. Parents make sure you have parental controls turned on if you have a small child(ren). My 3 year old was looking at some children's stories on the and got into the store buying this book. I didn't realize it for some time and didn't want to fool with requesting a refund from . Since I bought it I might as well read it. Story has a plot line that moves along and I don't think there were very many moments that were boring. Author does a great job of painting the imagery of the settings. I wouldn't have ordinarily purchased this book as it is not really my taste, but it was an entertaining read.
Review WHISKEY DEVILS by Brandon Zenner
In 27 Chapters, Brandon Zenner has produced a terse and tight little novel with BIG impact, style, drama, characters and action and mystery! His characterizations are full blown and his conversational language is spot-on modern for the characters, (evocative of Raymond Chandler) I felt the speed and the heat and the fear and the loyalty and the angst and the final turning of our hero from an innocent young person of folly into a MAN who knows what he WILL NOT involve himself with anymore, even if it means leaving the woman he tried to save. (Yes, there are turns and twists you might not have seen coming!) This second novel does Zenner proud.
I loved his first novel, THE EXPERIMENT OF DREAMS! I have it on Audible and ! It had many of the features I crave to stimulate my grey cells! Look for my review on this novel. As a writer, myself, I am happy to encourage new writers. Brandon Zenner is a new author to watch and to read! He is personable and generous to his followers in giving us short stories and access to his work. I know that Brandon will have a long and successful career at writing novels, if he continues in his pursuit. He understands that we who read novels crave something new and mind-bending (if not mind-blowing), but we expect it to be believable at the same time. He accomplishes that in THE EXPERIMENT OF DREAMS and follows through in WHISKEY DEVILS. Thank you, Brandon, for pursuing your dream to write and for sharing it with the world.
